UtilityCloud cuts carbon emissions by 60% while the platform keeps growing

Company news

UtilityCloud has cut its total market-based greenhouse gas emissions by about 60%, from 27.1 to 10.8 tonnes CO2e, according to our latest Eco-Lighthouse (Miljøfyrtårn) reporting. At the same time, targeted optimisation of the platform has reduced calculated emissions from our Azure cloud usage by 24%, while the number of meter points on the platform grew by 23%.

Emissions down about 60%

As an Eco-Lighthouse certified company, we report our climate footprint every year. The latest reporting shows total market-based greenhouse gas emissions of 10.8 tonnes CO2e in 2025, down from 27.1 tonnes in 2024.

The reduction comes from targeted measures across energy, transport and resource use:

  • lower energy use at our offices
  • more use of district heating
  • less business travel and fewer flights
  • more electric cars instead of petrol or diesel cars for business driving

Calculated with the location-based method, which uses the average emissions of the electricity grid, emissions went down 29%, from 7.55 to 5.3 tonnes CO2e.

A greener platform: more meter points, lower emissions

Over the past year we have refactored and optimised code and architecture to reduce the number of calls to Microsoft Azure and the need for data storage and processing.

From March 2025 to March 2026, calculated monthly carbon emissions from our Azure usage fell by 24%, from 376 to 288 kg CO2. In the same period, the number of meter points on the platform grew by 23%, from 494,000 to 606,000.

It shows that more functionality and scale can go hand in hand with a lower environmental footprint. These Azure figures are calculated separately from our Eco-Lighthouse reporting and are used as operational targets for resources and operations.

Office energy well below the industry average

In 2025, our offices used 87.3 kWh per square metre, compared with a reported average of 197.8 kWh/m² for IT companies in Norway. Energy use per square metre fell by 53% from 2024. Part of that drop comes from an updated calculation model, as electricity use is now based on meter data from Elhub.

Emissions from air travel fell by 26%, from 5.41 to 3.98 tonnes CO2e, and most business driving reimbursed by mileage allowance, 1,217 of 1,440 km, was done in electric cars.

Built on energy-efficient cloud infrastructure

UtilityCloud is a multi-tenant cloud platform: development, operations and infrastructure are shared across customers. The platform serves more than one million households, and the shared model uses infrastructure better, lowers energy use per customer and per meter point, and removes the need for local hardware and separate operations and test environments at each customer.

The platform runs on Microsoft Azure in the West Europe (Netherlands) and North Europe (Ireland) regions. Microsoft reports an average Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.16 for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, compared with around 1.6 for traditional data centres. Water use is 0.03 litres per kWh in the region, well below Microsoft’s global average of 0.27. In 2024, Microsoft reused or recycled 90.9% of servers and components, and has committed to matching 100% of its electricity use with renewable energy.

Automation also matters. Fewer manual processes, less rework, less paper and no local infrastructure to run all reduce the resources our customers spend on billing and customer service.

Waste: room for improvement

Not every figure moved in the right direction. Total office waste increased from 80 kg in 2024 to 96 kg in 2025, and the share of sorted waste fell from 77% to 65%. Larger purchases of office supplies led to more residual waste, and a one-off event added a large number of glass bottles.

Certified until 2027

UtilityCloud has been Eco-Lighthouse certified since June 2024. The certificate is valid until 27 June 2027 and covers the common criteria for private and public organisations. The full report is available on Eco-Lighthouse’s reporting portal.
